Containers for the transportation of goods for various types of transport must comply with international standards, which allows them to be used for international trade. They vary in size and specificity for different types of goods.
Types of containers for the transportation of goods by design features
- Universal containers — sealed, have rigid walls, ends and a roof. Suitable for most loads.
- Refrigerated container. Equipped with a freezing unit that maintains a negative temperature. Needs a power source. Allows you to transport perishable goods in chilled and frozen form.
- Container with thermal insulation. The internal part is lined with insulating material, which allows you to maintain the original temperature of the product for a long time, avoiding freezing or severe overheating.
- Ventilated containers The presence of ventilation protects delicate cargo, such as vegetables and fruits, from damage.
- Tank container for transporting liquids and liquefied gas. It is a tank fixed on a durable frame.
- Platforms — open containers intended for transportation of non-bulk large goods.
- Open top container. Designed for transportation of bulk substances. There is a type of open container with a removable top that opens for loading and is secured during transport.
There are other types of shipping containers that are a type of universal one, for example, those that open on both sides or have doors on the long side.
Cargo containers are also divided by size. However, the size used depends on the transport for which they are intended. Due to the large space available for sea transportation, the following types of containers can be used:
Types of sea containers for transporting goods
The following types of containers are used for sea transportation:
- 20-foot container with external dimensions 6.06 by 2.43 by 2.59 m.
- 40-foot container 12.19 by 2.34 by 2.27 m.
- 40ft tall container 12.19 x 2.34 x 2.58 m.
- 45 feet 13.72 by 2.50 by 2.75 m.
Types of railway containers
The same 20-foot and 40-foot containers are used for rail as for sea transportation.
In addition to them, smaller containers are used, allowing cargo to be transported on standard railway platforms:
- 3 t container with dimensions 2.1 by 1.32 by 2.4.
- 5 t container with dimensions 2.1 by 2.65 by 2.4 m.
- 20-foot container 6.06 by 2.44 by 2.35 m.
When choosing a container, you need to pay attention to its safety, the absence of external damage, dirt, and rust. It must have reliable external and, if necessary, internal fastenings and high-quality locking mechanisms. Having saved on cargo transportation, you can lose on goods damage due to the wrong container for cargo transportation.
