Pulses play an important role in ensuring food security in Russia. The main imported crops include peas (Pisum sativum), beans (Phaseolus vulgaris), lentils (Lens culinaris), and chickpeas (Cicer arietinum).
The main supplier countries to Russia are:
- Turkey is the largest exporter of chickpeas and lentils, accounting for about 25% of all pulse imports. Turkish producers offer high-quality products at a low cost, which has become possible thanks to the developing agro-industrial system.
- China is a leading supplier of beans and mung beans, accounting for approximately 20% of total imports. Chinese producers are distinguished by large production volumes, as well as a wide range of varieties.
- Kyrgyzstan is a significant exporter of beans, supplying about 15% of imports. It is famous for its rich taste and environmentally friendly production methods.
